Pill lowers risk for cardiovascular disease by a third

Circulatory disorders often develop in Secret. High blood pressure is about hurt, pain without. Also a high cholesterol, clogged blood vessels, without the brain something to tell. The consequences often only when vessels are so clogged strong, that the blood stops flow, and heart or brain are no longer supplied with sufficient oxygen.

The consequences of such cardiovascular diseases are among the most common complaints, alone 2015 ill estimated 422,7 million people on the heart and circulation, 18 million were killed.

It could be often prevented – not only through a different life style, but also by drugs: Already more than 15 years ago, researchers developed for the first time provides a convenient pill, which is at the same time the blood pressure-lowering and cholesterol-lowering and blood-thinning Aspirin. In the case of all people aged 55 and over applied, could reduce the pill cardiovascular disease by more than 80 percent, resulted in a model calculation, in 2001. In reality, such an agent has been tested in a large group over a long period of time.

Now researchers have closed this gap a bit. In their study, in more than 200 villages in Iran, they showed that such a Polypille can reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular diseases in fact, if not by 80 percent.

Healthier food, less Smoking, pill to swallow

In the investigation, more than 6800 people participated, their ages ranged from 50 to 75 years. Only 90 percent had at the beginning of the study, a cardiovascular disease, write the scientists led by Reza Malekzadeh of Tehran University of Medical Sciences in the medical journal “The Lancet”. According to the random principle, they divided the participants in the village compound in two groups:

  • One half received only health information, was informed about the benefits of a diet low in salt, sugar and fats, as well as the risks through Smoking and the consumption of Opium – widespread habit in the Region.
  • The remaining participants received the same information, but received, in addition, a pill with four ingredients that you should take once a day. The medication consisted of Aspirin, two common blood pressure, as well as a means to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood.

The study ran a total of five years. In this period, the researchers documented developed, how often participants have severe cardiovascular disease such as heart attack or stroke. There were significant differences between the groups: While participants without a pill – 8.8 percent, seriously diseased, it in the pills eaters 5.9 per cent – a third less. Accordingly, about 35 participants had to be with the pill treated to prevent serious cardiovascular disease.

Even more significant the effect was, when the researchers considered only those participants who swallowed the pill until the end of regularly. In this sub-group and about 63 percent of the pills group of sufferers within five years, only four per cent. The risk for a serious cardiovascular disease was more than half lower than in the Non-pill group.

And what about side effects?

What is surprising: the pill-takers, however, while the cholesterol levels somewhat higher than in the other group, the blood pressure values remained similar. One reason for this could be that all participants, no matter from which group – high blood pressure was treated. Nobody was deprived of a therapy. The observed, less common cardiovascular diseases in the pill group were therefore probably mainly contains Aspirin and not the blood pressure, the researchers write in the study.

The idea to treat entire groups of the population of a certain age as a preventative, but also poses a major disadvantage. It means that even perfectly healthy people to swallow medication and the risk for side effects expose. Aspirin, for instance, increases permanently taken the risk of stomach bleeding. At least in the study period of five years, but the researchers observed no serious side effects.

It makes sense to use the pill, especially in Emerging and developing countries, which have no close health care, and in which the number of heart sick people increases. There is a widely available, affordable Polypille could improve access to essential medicines and, therefore, the consequences of cardiovascular disease to reduce significantly, as it says in the accompanying Lancet commentary.

Actually, the United Nations have made in their sustainability goals, to reduce the number of premature deaths from cardiovascular diseases by 2030 by one-third. Most of the Emerging and developing countries will miss this target, the researchers write.
