Best supplements for blood pressure: One of the ‘most effective’ capsules for hypertension
High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than 25 percent of all adults in the UK. But you could lower your risk of developing hypertension by simply taking daily lycopene supplements, it’s been claimed.
Hypertension puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.
Eating an unhealthy diet or not doing enough regular exercise could be raising your chances of high blood pressure.
But, you could lower your chances of developing the condition by taking supplements, scientists have claimed.
One of the best remedies for hypertension is lycopene supplements, it’s been revealed.
Lycopene is the powerful antioxidant that gives tomatoes their characteristic red colour.
Regularly taking the supplements could lower your blood pressure by as much as 5/4mmHg, scientists have claimed.
If you choose to take lycopene capsules, the optimal dose is around 15mg per day, said nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer.
If you’re male, the supplements also have the added benefit of improving the health of your prostate gland.

“Tomato extracts are one of the most effective natural remedies for high blood pressure,” said Dr Brewer, on her website MyLowerBloodPressure.com.
“Tomatoes are a source of two heart-friendly supplements that are beneficial when your blood pressure is raised; one is lycopene and the other is an interesting substance known as ‘Fruitflow’ which helps to prevent unwanted blood clots.
“Diet should always come first so eat more tomatoes, tomato products, papaya and watermelon – but check medication leaflets for interactions before eating grapefruit and its juice.
“However, there is clear evidence that for people with hypertension, taking lycopene supplements is beneficial.”

Meanwhile, you could also lower your risk of high blood pressure by taking potassium supplements.
It works by regulating the amount of sodium in the body.
Too much sodium raises blood pressure, while potassium clears sodium from the body.
The mineral also relaxes the walls of blood vessels, which subsequently lowers your risk of hypertension.
