Effects of Corona: Danish researchers warn against Obesity epidemic

With the Corona-pandemic, the Lockdown came in for a lot of people – we should stay home, contacts, to limit, to the home office to go. With the pandemic, and the Lockdown also psychological and economic insecurity in the population came. All of this could have health effects, the three researchers from Denmark. They warn of an “Obesity epidemic”, like the Danish TV channel TV2 reported.

The scientists are of the view that the comprehensive Lockdown have created in large Parts of the world due to the Coronavirus to be fertile ground for a new financial crisis, the extent of which is still unknown. The researcher Christoffer Clemmensen, Michael Bang Petersen and Thorkild I. A. Sørensen fear, therefore, that the impact of the pandemic could be a worsening “Obesity epidemic” or an increase in the number of obese people.

Social and psychological aspects play a role

The increase in unemployment and the associated Fears and uncertainties would contribute to the mental and social conditions of the people would deteriorate, think the researchers. They were of the view that the poorer mental health in the population could lead to people eating more.

“Obesity is very complex. It’s not just about how much we eat, but also to the social and psychological conditions that we have,” says Michael Bang Petersen, a researcher in biological psychology from the University of Aarhus.

The approval he receives from his colleague Thorkild I. A. Sørensen, Professor at the metabolism centre and the epidemiology Department of the University of Copenhagen. He says that the lock downs would result in a significant deterioration of the everyday life of many people. “Economic and psychological insecurity, unemployment and the like cause the body to react with Stress, which increases the obesity. The body is similar to the susceptibility due to the build-up of fat reserves, which increases the risk for consequences such as Diabetes, high blood pressure and heart attacks.”

Survey: 38 percent of Germans move less

According to TV2, 38 per cent of adults had since the Corona pandemic, and the Lockdown in Denmark, stopped to play sports. Sørensen says: “The closures have made it more difficult physical activities. It exacerbates the risk of a dangerous development of obesity.” The researchers are of the view that the Danish welfare and health care system could mitigate this development.

According to the world health organization it is with a Body Mass Index of at least 25 are considered overweight, obese, from a value of 30. The BMI is calculated by weight divided by the height in meters squared. According to the statistics portal Statista, more than 36 percent of Germans were in the year 2017, overweight with a BMI between 25 and 30, 15.2% had a BMI between 30 and 40.

Also in Germany, the Lockdown would have an impact on the weight and movement of the people, as a survey by the opinion research Institute YouGov on behalf of the German press Agency revealed at the end of April of this year. 38 percent of adults in Germany would move less, 19 percent had sets as a result of their changed habits to weight. Only 12 percent of the respondents were removed, therefore, more in movement than before, 8 percent would be due to the Corona-measures.

“Lack of exercise not only favored the development of Obesity, but also reduces physical Fitness, coordination and agility,” said Heidrun Thaiss, Director of the Federal centre for health education (BZgA), of the DPA. “In addition, the Psyche suffers from a lack of movement.”

Representative Survey

With the wheel and on foot: Corona in German in movement

German encouraged, to drive a wheel or to go

However, there are also positive consequences: Since the Corona, there is in many families, more time for healthy meals. In the survey, only 13 percent of adults reported to feed on unhealthy. In return, 12 percent said to eat in the course of the corona crisis healthier.

That more than usual and nibbled will not be eaten, for example, because of the way to the fridge in the home office is far, plays at least according to the YouGov respondents hardly a role. Only 15 percent reported that their food quantity was increased by 11 per cent even went to eat in the course of the Corona-lock downs, overall, less. However, a little miscalculation might in the game: According to the international confectionery trade Association, sales of confectionery increased in the corona of a crisis, in March a double-digit increase was recorded.

A survey from the beginning of July, however, a different picture: A good part of the population has been encouraged by the crisis to ride more with the bike, trails to walk, instead of driving back, or sweat more often in the gym, at home or in the garden. This was the result of a representative survey on behalf of the DKV German health insurance, the DPA reported.

22 percent said that they go in their leisure time more with the wheel. Similar to the size of the group of those who pulls itself together after its own information, more and more fitness training at home or in the garden. 26 percent reported that they use more trails to explore on foot or on the bike instead of the car, Bus or train. 37 percent said to go on more walks. Also Jogging or walking was at 15 per cent a bit more popular.

Psychology

So you manage to stay strong during the crisis

Lockdown for a lot of mental stress

“A lot of people have a fear that the Lockdown could exacerbate the already in Parts of the company’s existing lack of movement further,” said the Chairman of the DKV, Clemens Muth. The new survey data are from his point of view, therefore, a positive Surprise.

In addition to physical health in Corona-times, a focus on the mental Constitution was thrown. Here, the study paints a rather darker picture. More than a third (39 per cent) stated that the restrictions by the corona of a crisis – if they last longer – a “rather negative” or “very negative” impact on their mental health. In the case of people who have children, the proportion was even greater.

As a very distressing the respondents felt that mainly the lack of contact with the family outside of their household (25 percent) and to friends (24 percent). 25 percent of the respondents stated that they consider the economic development of the society as being very stressful. Interestingly, they said, but only eleven percent that they are harmful to its own economic development. The Work in the home office looked at only four percent as a great burden.
